When I think of a mustard seed, the word “tiny” comes to mind. Not “grand”. Not “magnificent”. Just “tiny”, “little”, or “small”. Definitely not “big”. But most definitely “minute”.
The most awesome fact about a mustard seed though is that it grows to be one humungous tree! It’s mind blowing to look at that insy winsy tiny little seed and think “big”. And it’s mind blowing to look at that humungous tree and think “small”. But there it is. Big and small. Tiny and humungous. Together in one.
Growing up, I always heard people say “if you have faith as big as a mustard seed, you can move mountains.” As a Christian, that reminds me of a verse in the bible where this saying originates from – Matthew 17 verse 20…….
He replied, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”
When I was a kid, I always imagined myself saying to Mount Ousley “Jump into the ocean” and that it would obey me. Try as I might though, no matter how many times I said it, Mount Ousley stayed right where it was. And remains there to this very day (I haven’t stopped trying)!
Mountains weren’t my only victims when it came to moving things with my faith. Trees, buildings, traffic lights, rocks, utensils, plates, bikes, toys…..you name it, I tried to move it. But they all stayed where they were. Nothing budged. Obviously, I was doing something wrong.
Now, I want to assure you that faith indeed has everything to do with moving mountains, and very little to do with religion. Confused? Read on.
Let me start by asking you a question…….
What is a mountain?
A mountain is a gigantic land mass which is raised hundreds and thousands of meters, even kilometres above sea level. It is so tall you can’t see over it. It is so wide you have to walk for many days to get around it, if you could at all. And who knows if you could ever dig through it! If it was possible to go through it, that task would probably take you longer than walking around it!
So, a mountain is essentially a massive immovable object that is in the way of a person moving forward. A perceived problem. A challenge. Something to conquer. Its mere size is intimidating and overpowering.
Now, what is faith?
Faith is more or less trust, or belief, in something or someone. It is about having confidence in ability and/or strengths. It is knowing someone or something is reliable and won’t let you down.
We can have many different mountains in our lives at any one given time. Some can be shrunk to hills. Others seem insurmountable and dwarf Mount Everest in comparison. Our mountains can intimidate us and threaten to overshadow our lives.
One person’s mountain may be that of financial hardship. Another person’s mountain may be a child’s behaviour at school. Another person may have a mountain in the shape of a custody battle. And yet another person’s mountain may take the form of grief from the loss of a loved one. Mountains can look like broken relationships, ill health, or loss of employment, or thousands of other things. But like all mountains, they appear to be planted firmly where they stand and seem impossible to pass.
If this was a cake recipe, the raising agent would be faith. It’s the missing ingredient between you overcoming the problem or the problem overcoming you.
And how much faith do you need for your problem to be tackled, I hear you ask? Well, that’s easy…….
The size of a mustard seed.
Nothing more. Just a tiny grain. Because it isn’t the size of your faith that matters, it’s how you water it which makes all the difference. The mustard seed, when nurtured correctly, grows into a magnificent huge tree. For something so insy to become something so mighty, to conquer such a small beginning in order to have such a big impact, is nothing short of astounding and inspirational!
No matter how small your faith is, if you have any at all, it can move your mountain.
