ONCE UPON A TIME
Once upon a time
There was a little girl
Who sat on her back step
And dreamed.
She dreamed of what life
Would one day be like
On the other side
Of the fence.
Little girls dream of
Pretty things,
Sparkly things and fairies
And butterflies.
She dreams of a
Handsome Prince
Who will love her
At first sight.
She dreams she is
More beautiful
Than Cinderella,
And that life itself
Does not
Outshine her at all.
Such dreams, such belief,
Such beautiful thoughts,
Are only found
When you look
In her eyes.
Once upon a time
There was a little girl
Who sat on her back step
And cried.
All her dreams
Had vanished
With one swipe of
A cruel man’s smile.
Such dreams, such belief,
Such beautiful thoughts
Had left
Her trusting eyes,
Clouded now by tears.
Was not so easy
Anymore
To see where
The spark
Once lived.
In the midst
Of my soul
This little girl dwells
Now feeling
Safe and secure.
I cradle her
Everyday
And tell her often
How special she is.
This hurt little girl
Who was left alone
Is thriving in my heart.
This hurt little girl
Who now holds my hand,
Is me.
