WHAT LIES WITHIN US

Screenshot_20181003-103730I came across this quote yesterday…..

“What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

So, what does this actually mean?

Now, you’re probably thinking it is pretty straight forward, and it probably is for you. But I want to go through it for those who don’t really see its meaning.

What lies behind us……..

Is this referring to the mess you just passed in your teen’s room of which you closed the door on?

Or the wet towels sitting on the bathtub left there last night along with the puddle of water on the floor?

No, I don’t think so.

It’s referring to our past – all the stuff which tends to follow us around like a bad smell. It just won’t go away no matter how fast we try to run! That stuff may be huge stuff to deal with, but there is something bigger according to this quote.

What lies behind usWhat lies before us…..

Is this referring to the door you need to walk through in a minute in order to go to work?

Or the Lego left on the floor left in the hallway by one of your kids which now you have to skilfully dodge because you’re rushing to answer the phone?

No, I don’t think so.

It’s referring to our future – all the things we are going to do, decisions we are going to make, places we are going to go (or not go) etc, which usually are impacted by our past experiences. Those things can be scary and indeed are huge! Fears of our past repeating or proving us wrong can be greater than the action itself.

Compared to what lies within us…..

Is this referring to what you had for lunch, the gas build-up in your bowel, or how fast your heart is beating?

Or your overall general health?

No, I don’t think so.

Even though health is important, this part of the quote is referring to our inner thoughts and feelings. Meaning, what it is we think and feel about ourselves.

What lies behind us.02Everything we do pivots on what we are thinking and feeling most days. That’s how people operate – reacting to what they think of or feel towards something or someone. When it comes to ourselves, we are no different in that judgement.

Usually, what we see in others is something we despise in ourselves. How we treat ourselves and how we talk about ourselves both publicly and privately, in the company of people or secretly when alone is reflective of whether we think we deserve respect.

There’s no way we would let others treat themselves poorly. So, we shouldn’t let us do it to ourselves either.

Overall, what we think of ourselves, how we feel about ourselves and how we treat ourselves are much bigger issues than our past or our future. Our past has affected who we are today, but who we are today will affect who we are in the future.

So…..
